Happy Halloween, folks. (I really don’t understand this strange holiday)I didn’t forget this week. Joy.
Meet the Cold War Kids. An indie rock band from California who make some really fantastic music. This song, Hang Me Up To Dry, is on their first studio album, Robbers and Cowards released in 2006. They’ve since released 2 other studio albums, Loyalty to Loyalty and Mine is Yours, the latter being released at the beginning of this year. I would describe their sound as having a foundation in rock but incorporating a whisper of pop that adds an infectious energy that keeps you listening for hours.Although Hang Me Up To Dry is my favorite Cold War Kids song, my favorite album is Loyalty to Loyalty for a very odd reason. When I first came across these boys and their second album, I was reminded of a paper with the same title written by philosopher Josiah Royce. As a philosophy major, this little find was a little too exciting. The paper was a challenge to Nietzshe’s idea of “superman” and “will to power.” NPR does a better job than I could expounding on these ideas. To paraphrase, Cold War Kids’ Loyalty to Loyalty incorporates the ideas Royce introduced in his paper, namely that “the ultimate pursuit of mankind should be to live in community and embrace each other, not to try to trample each other and rise to the top.”
Now, isn’t that an easy idea to get behind?
I hope you all enjoy this last day of October. Please be safe as you celebrate (or not) this day by dressing as a sexy skunk or scrabble board. I, on the other hand, will be dressed, per usual, as a sexy Indian (feathers, turquoise and all) and sitting Indian style in my apartment eating pumpkin seeds.
Cheers.
Atlas Café edition
The Boy and I don’t have internet in our apartment and no one is naive enough to keep their wireless unlocked, so we have to venture down a few blocks to Atlas Café. Atlas Café has been a lifesaver this past weekend. They sell delicious coffee and tea, and the ambience is lovely. It is quite popular so you need to show up a tad early to secure yourself a table. On nice days you can sit at tables on the sidewalk—perfect for hipster watching. Atlas Café is yet another reason I love my neighborhood.
Look at The Boy buying something at the counter.
